By 1850, a village had taken shape from Major Mackenzie Drive to neighboring streets. Over the next three decades, the town grew rapidly, and by 1873 Richmond Hill was considered a village.

With the introduction of the automobile in the early 1900s came a growth in population and employment in Richmond Hill. Building slowed during the war years, but the post war suburban phenomenon had a major positive impact on Richmond Hill. Since then, Richmond Hill has grown in every capacity including employment, population, residential and commercial development.
