History of Etobicoke
The township of Etobicoke was born in early the 1850s and had a population of just under 3,000. In 1911 the community of Mimico was incorporated into Etobicoke.
Etobicoke was home to the world's first concrete four lane highway, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which was opened in 1931. The highway connected what is now Mississauga with Hamilton. It was later extended into downtown Toronto, as well as south to Niagara Falls.
In 1954, the township of Etobicoke became part of Toronto for the first time. It was incorporated as its own city in 1984, only to be one of six Toronto municipalities that the Ontario government merged to form today's "Toronto."
Living in Etobicoke, ON
Etobicoke has many excellent elementary and secondary schools. It is also home to Humber College, which also houses a University of Guelph campus within its walls to allow students to obtain a college diploma, a university degree, or both with the bridging program. Ryerson University, George Brown College, York University, and Seneca College are just a few of the many post-secondary schools that are within a reasonable commute from Etobicoke.
Etobicoke has lots of great conservation areas, walking trails, and parks. There is lots of opportunity to join many different sports leagues including soccer, baseball, hockey and lacrosse.
Etobicoke is a short commute from the downtown core and TTC buses are easily accessible. There are three subway stations in Etobicoke as well, making commuting even easier.
