The township of North York commenced in June of 1922 as part of a rural outskirt of York. In 1954, the township of North York became part of Metropolitan Toronto for the first time. In 1967, it became known as the Borough of North York, and then in 1979 the City of North York. The Downsview Airport was built in 1939 as an airfield, and following the war it has acted as an air base for Royal Canadian Air Force units.
