Homes for Sale in Uxbridge

Uxbridge is a suburban township located just 65km northeast of Toronto. Tucked into the Oak Ridges Moraine, it is known for its picturesque scenery and natural beauty. This combination of rural landscape and proximity to Ontario’s largest city make Uxbridge a highly desirable location for many.

Just over 22,000 people call Uxbridge home. While many residents commute either to Toronto or one of the nearby Durham Region municipalities for work, there’s plenty of opportunity locally. Over 1,700 businesses contribute to Uxbridge’s thriving economy in industries like agriculture and manufacturing.

History of Uxbridge

The Uxbridge area was first settled in 1806, as sects of Quakers migrated northwards from Catawissa, Pennsylvania. For years the Quakers reaped the benefits of Uxbridge’s fertile land and abundant natural resources. The Friends’ Meeting House on Quaker Hill, first built in 1806 and then refurbished in 1820 by Ezekiel James, stands to this day as a monument to the settlers’ industry.

In 1871, the Toronto and Nipissing Railway began to service Uxbridge. Opening the area to freight and passenger traffic helped to spur growth in the region. The historical railway line is still active as the York-Durham Heritage Railway, shuffling tourists along the corridor in vintage railroad cars from the 1920s and 1950s.

Uxbridge attained village status in 1872, and then town status in 1885. In the early 1970s, Uxbridge Town was amalgamated as Uxbridge Township into the Durham Region. This helped to foster economic and social links between Uxbridge and other Durham municipalities, a collaboration that continues today.
