History of Toronto

When Europeans arrived in what is now known as Toronto, it had been occupied by the Iroquois people for centuries. The name "Toronto" is said to have come from the Iroquois work "tkaronto" which translates to "place where trees stand in water."

In 1793, Governor John Graves Simcoe established Toronto as the Town of York, naming it after the Duke of York and Albany at the time. This formation was at what is now the base of Parliament and Front Streets.

In the 19th century, an extensive sewage system and long distance railway track were constructed. Streetcars came around in 1891, and became a public ownership in 1921.

In 1954, what was known as Metropolitan Toronto was formed by amalgamating 12 different municipalities. Some were separated again in 1967 Including Etobicoke, North York and more, but were rejoined again in 1998 to form the current city as it is today.
