Moving Soon? Your Complete Address Change Checklist
Friday, July 3, 2026
One forgotten address change can lead to missed bills, delayed deliveries, and unnecessary stress. Here's how to stay one step ahead.
Moving Soon? Here's One Thing You Don't Want to Forget
Moving into a new home is an exciting milestone. Whether you're buying your first home, moving up, downsizing, or relocating to a new community, there's a lot to think about before moving day arrives.
Between packing boxes, arranging movers, transferring utilities, changing schools, and preparing your new home, it's easy to focus on the move itself while overlooking one important task that can create unnecessary headaches later.
Updating your address may not be the most exciting part of moving, but it's one of the most important.
With so much happening, many people don't begin notifying organizations of their new address until after they've moved. Unfortunately, that can lead to missed bills, delayed deliveries, important government notices arriving at the wrong address, and a lot of unnecessary stress.
The good news is that most of this can be avoided with a little planning.
In fact, many organizations should know your new address before moving day, helping ensure your mail, important documents, and essential services begin arriving at your new home from day one.
To help make your move easier, I've put together this practical checklist outlining who you should notify before you move, what can wait until after you've settled in, and a few helpful tips I've learned from helping buyers and sellers move throughout Durham Region since 1989.
Your Moving Timeline
Keeping track of when to complete each task can make moving feel much more manageable.
• 2–4 Weeks Before Moving
Arrange Canada Post mail forwarding, notify your financial institutions, schedule utility transfers, update your employer, and begin preparing your address change list.
• Moving Week
Confirm your movers, prepare your First Night Essentials box, keep important documents with you, and complete a final walkthrough of your current home.
• After You Move
Update your government records, notify your healthcare providers, confirm your Canada Revenue Agency information, and finish notifying anyone who still needs your new address.
With a little planning, you'll spend less time chasing paperwork and more time enjoying your new home.
2 to 4 Weeks Before Moving
The weeks leading up to your move are the ideal time to complete many of the administrative tasks that are easy to forget once moving day arrives.
Taking care of these items early can help prevent missed mail, interrupted services, and unnecessary stress later.
Set Up Canada Post Mail Forwarding
One of the smartest things you can do before moving is arrange mail forwarding through Canada Post.
Think of it as a safety net.
Even if you accidentally forget to notify someone about your new address, your mail can still be forwarded while you continue updating your records.
Canada Post recommends arranging mail forwarding approximately 30 days before your move. Many homeowners choose to keep the service active for about one year, giving them plenty of time to identify any organizations they may have overlooked.
Notify Your Financial Institutions
Updating your financial information before moving helps ensure important correspondence continues arriving without interruption.
Remember to notify your:
• Bank
• Credit Card Companies
• Mortgage Lender
• Investment Advisor
• Pension Providers
• Insurance Companies
• Financial Planner
Taking care of these updates before moving day can help avoid missed statements, renewal notices, tax documents, and other important mail.
Arrange Utility Transfers
There's nothing worse than arriving at your new home only to discover your hydro or internet hasn't been connected.
Before moving day, schedule connection and disconnection dates for:
• Hydro
• Natural Gas
• Water
• Internet
• Television
• Home Phone
• Home Security Monitoring
• Lawn Care or Snow Removal Services (if applicable)
Whenever possible, confirm installation appointments several days before your move to avoid unexpected delays.
Notify Your Employer
Don't forget to update your employer or Human Resources department with your new address.
This helps ensure your payroll information, tax slips, benefits, pension documents, and employment records remain accurate.
If you're self-employed, remember to update your business records, invoices, stationery, website, and any online business profiles that display your address.
Schools & Educational Programs
If your move involves changing schools, begin the transfer process as early as possible.
Some schools require registration, documentation, or proof of your new address before your child can begin classes.
Also remember to notify:
• Daycare Providers
• Colleges
• Universities
• Scholarship Programs
• Trade Schools
Planning ahead can help make the transition much smoother for everyone in the family.
Update Your Subscription Services
It's amazing how many recurring services are tied to your current address.
Before moving, take a few minutes to update your information with:
• Amazon
• Magazine Subscriptions
• Meal Delivery Services
• Loyalty Programs
• Streaming Services
• Fitness Memberships
• Wine Clubs or Subscription Boxes
• Any other service that regularly ships to your home
It's a small task that can save you from missed deliveries and unnecessary frustration later.
During Moving Week
By the week of your move, most of the major planning should already be complete.
Now it's simply a matter of confirming the details and making sure you're ready for moving day.
A few final checks can make all the difference.
• Confirm your moving company and arrival time.
• Confirm utility connection dates.
• Finish packing and clearly label every box.
• Keep valuables, jewellery, and important documents with you rather than loading them onto the moving truck.
• Confirm key pickup arrangements with your lawyer or REALTOR®.
• Complete one final walkthrough of your current home before leaving.
First Night Essentials
One of the most common moving day mistakes is packing everything onto the moving truck, only to spend your first evening searching through dozens of boxes looking for something simple.
Instead, prepare one clearly labelled First Night Essentials box or overnight bag and keep it with you in your vehicle.
Consider including:
• Prescription medications
• Phone chargers
• Laptop and charging cable
• Wallet, keys, and identification
• Toilet paper and paper towels
• Toiletries
• A change of clothes
• Coffee maker, coffee or tea, and mugs
• Basic snacks and bottled water
• Cleaning supplies
• Pet food and supplies
• Children's favourite toys or comfort items
• Basic tools (hammer, screwdriver, utility knife)
• Flashlight and batteries
• Important documents, including your Agreement of Purchase and Sale, moving contract, insurance information, and legal documents
Having these essentials close at hand will make your first evening in your new home much more comfortable while the rest of your belongings remain packed.
Share Your New Address with Ease
One of the easiest ways to let family, friends, neighbours, and service providers know you've moved is to have personalized moving cards ready before moving day.
As part of my service, every buyer receives custom moving cards featuring a photo of their new home, together with their new address and move-in date.
They're about the size of a business card, making them easy to hand to family members, friends, neighbours, schools, or anyone else who needs your updated contact information.
It's one of those little extras that many of my clients tell me made moving just a little easier.
Every buyer I work with receives personalized moving cards featuring a photo of their new home, making it quick and easy to share their new address with family, friends, and service providers.
From My Experience
Over the years, I've learned that it's often the small details that make a move feel much less stressful.
That's one of the reasons I started giving buyers personalized moving cards.
They're simple, practical, and easy to keep in a wallet or purse. Many of my clients have told me they made sharing their new address much easier during those busy first few weeks after moving.
Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference.
Thinking About Buying or Selling?
Whether you're buying your first home, moving up, downsizing, or relocating within Durham Region, having a plan before moving day can make the entire process much less stressful.
If you're planning a move and have questions before, during, or after the process, I'm always happy to help.

After You Move
Congratulations!
The moving truck has been unloaded, the keys are in your hand, and you've officially arrived at your new home.
While the unpacking may take days or even weeks, there are still a few important tasks to complete to ensure everything is updated correctly.
Fortunately, most of these can be done over the next few days, allowing you to settle into your new home with confidence.
Update Government Records
One of your first priorities should be updating your government-issued identification and records.
If you live in Ontario, remember to update your:
• Driver's Licence
• Vehicle Registration
• Ontario Health Card
Ontario has specific timelines for updating some of these records, so it's a good idea to complete them as soon as possible after moving.
If you're moving to another province or territory, be sure to check your local government website for the applicable requirements and deadlines.
Update the Canada Revenue Agency
Don't forget to update your address with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Keeping your address current helps ensure you continue receiving important tax documents, benefit information, and government correspondence without interruption.
If you have a CRA My Account, updating your address online is quick and straightforward.
Notify Your Healthcare Providers
Your healthcare providers should also have your current address on file.
Remember to notify your:
• Family Doctor
• Dentist
• Pharmacy
• Optometrist
• Specialists
• Veterinarian
Updating these records helps ensure appointment reminders, prescriptions, referrals, and important medical correspondence continue reaching you.
Notify Family, Friends & Community Organizations
Once you've settled into your new home, it's time to let everyone else know where you've moved.
This includes:
• Family
• Friends
• Neighbours
• Clubs and Associations
• Volunteer Organizations
• Religious Organizations
• Charities You Support
• Accountant
• Lawyer
If you received personalized moving cards, now's the perfect time to put them to good use.
Take Time to Get to Know Your New Home
Moving isn't just about unpacking boxes. It's also about becoming familiar with the home you'll be living in for years to come.
Spend a little time locating and testing some of your home's most important features.
Consider checking:
• Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
• Main water shut-off valve
• Electrical panel
• Furnace filter
• Sump pump (if applicable)
• Exterior water taps
• Garage door emergency release
• Circuit breaker labels
Taking a few minutes now can save valuable time if an emergency ever arises.
From My Experience
After helping buyers and sellers move for many years, I've noticed that the people who enjoy the smoothest moves aren't necessarily the ones with the fewest boxes.
They're the ones who stay organized.
Keep all of your moving-related information together in one place.
Whether it's a folder on your computer or a simple file at home, keep copies of address change confirmations, utility account numbers, warranties, appliance manuals, moving receipts, and important documents together.
If a question comes up weeks or even months later, you'll know exactly where to find what you need.
It's a simple habit that can save a lot of frustration.
